Salzburg, the capital of the province of the same name, is located in the north-west of Austria. Beautifully situated on the northern edge of the Alps and in the centre of the so-called Salzburg Basin, the city nestles up against the Salzach river on both sides. The boundaries of the old city centre are marked by the Fortress, Mönchsberg and Rainberg hills.
