Certified Centre for Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery
MIC Hospital, Berlin Germany
The Bariatric Centre is one of the largest in Germany. This renowned "high volume centre" ensures maximum safety for patients through a high frequency of operations and standardised surgical procedures resulting in short operation durations. All of the surgeons have years of experience.
The high quality of the centre is also reflected in the repeated certification as a centre of excellence for obesity and metabolic surgery by the German Society for General and Visceral Surgery (DGAV), initially in 2010. The latest recertification for a further 3 years took place in 2019. Treatment of obesity is part of a broad overall concept consisting of nutritional counseling, physical education, behavioural therapy and surgery. Individual particularities for each patient are taken into account.
Modern metabolic surgery at the Centre
All operations – including secondary procedures – are carried out in a minimally invasive and gentle manner using so-called " keyhole surgery". This guarantees rapid wound healing and enables quick mobilisation. The many years of experience of the surgeons and the entire team guarantee a high success rate and a low complication rate.
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass
Gastric bypass combines three mechanisms of effectiveness: firstly, the stomach is significantly reduced in size (restriction); secondly, less food is absorbed by altering the passage of food (malabsorption); and thirdly, hormones are altered by the operation, causing an early sensation of satiety and a delayed sensation of hunger. The hormonal changes in particular are of considerable importance for weight reduction. With the help of the gastric bypass, a significant weight reduction can be achieved, of up to 80% of the excess weight.
Omega-Loop Bypass
The Omega-Loop Bypass is also referred to as Mini Gastric Bypass (MGB) or Single Anastomosis Gastric Bypass (SAGB). As with the Y-Roux bypass, the stomach is reduced in size. In addition, hormonal changes and a change in the passage of food occur, as a result of which less food is absorbed. A considerable reduction in weight is achieved.
SADI bypass
SADI stands for Single Anastomosis Duodenol-ileal Bypass. It is a bypass variation and simplification of the bileopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD-DS). This operation achieves very good weight reduction and considerable improvement in concomitant diseases.
Sleeve gastrectomy
The sleeve gastrectomy is currently the most frequently performed operation worldwide.
During the operation, the stomach is significantly reduced in size (restriction) on the one hand, and hormones that influence the sensation of hunger and satiety are modified on the other. With this operation, a considerable reduction in weight can be achieved, up to about 70 percent of the excess weight.
Gastric band
The gastric band is an adjustable silicone band that is connected to a reservoir via a fine tube. The band can be adjusted via this reservoir/port by injecting it with saline solution.
Gastric balloon
The gastric balloon is mainly used in the lower obesity range (overweight/obesity grade I). In some cases, however, it is also used to reduce weight in extremely obese patients in order to bring them to an operable level.
