Shoulder Specialist Dr Andreas Kiekenbeck
The experienced team of doctors at the Orthopaedic Practice Clinic has many years of expertise in the field of foot surgery, knee surgery as well as hip endoprosthetics, arthroscopic surgery, and rheumatic surgery. The leading specialist in shoulder and elbow surgery at the ATOS MVZ Wiesbaden is Dr Andreas Kiekenbeck. His main areas of expertise include arthroscopic and open shoulder operations, as well as endoprosthetic treatment of the elbow and shoulder joint. He is also active in joint-preserving knee surgeries and endoprosthetics.
Expert in Elbow and Shoulder Surgery at the ATOS MVZ Wiesbaden
As the most flexible joint in the human body, the shoulder is particularly susceptible to injuries as well as to general wear and tear. However, Dr Kiekenbeck considers shoulder surgery only in case all conservative treatment options are exhausted. In consultation with the patient, it is decided which surgical procedure is most suitable in each individual situation. At the ATOS MVZ Wiesbaden, the treatment focus of the shoulder is placed on shoulder impingement, rotator cuff syndrome, frozen shoulder, and shoulder arthrosis.
Shoulder Arthrosis and Shoulder Prosthetics
Wear and tear of joint cartilage in shoulders occurs mainly after previous injuries. After reviewing the patient’s medical history and/or the X-ray records or performing an MRI of the shoulder, Dr Kiekenbeck decides whether a surgery is necessary. The main purpose of a surgical procedure is to control the pain caused by arthritis. The mobility of the shoulder can also improve as a result but usually does not regain its full function. Dr Kiekenbeck and his team either replace a single piece of the humerus with a prosthesis or they replace both joint shoulder parts. The rehabilitation phase begins on the first day after surgery and includes movement of the shoulder by applying a motorised splint. After release from the ATOS Clinic, the shoulder joint is built back up to functionality through applying physiotherapy and special outpatient physiotherapy.
Shoulder Impingement Syndrome – Soft Tissue Entrapment
The impingement syndrome can be diagnosed by performing a detailed medical history, X-ray examinations, or an MRI. Patients may experience a painful pinching of soft tissue when lifting the arm or lying down on the affected side. In this situation, Dr Kiekenbeck first initiates a conservative therapy consisting of anti-inflammatory drugs, physiotherapy, and physical therapy. If conservative therapy methods do not prove successful, Dr Kiekenbeck will perform a shoulder joint surgery. The surgical procedure for treatment of the shoulder impingement syndrome is either an arthroscopic technique or an open shoulder surgery.
Frozen Shoulder
Adhesive capsulitis, or “frozen shoulder”, is a painful inflammation in the shoulder leading to adhesion of the capsule layers. It occurs slowly or as a result of an accident. It is painful and turns into limitations of movement as the shoulder joint becomes stiff. Frozen shoulder therapy initially includes conservative therapy consisting of physiotherapy and physical therapy. A joint injection with a cortisone preparation is applied as well. The arthroscopic release for the treatment of the frozen shoulder is performed by Dr Kiekenbeck and involves dissolving the adhesion of the capsule layers. The rehabilitation phase of frozen shoulder syndrome includes physiotherapy, moist warmth application, and ultrasound therapy.
Center for Elbow Surgery in Wiesbaden
Dr Kiekenbeck successfully treats degenerative diseases and injuries of elbow joints. The elbow joint is a very complex part of the human bones, which can be regarded as an interaction between hands and shoulders. The ATOS MVZ Wiesbaden treats the following diseases: elbow injury caused by overstrain through exorcise (tennis, golf), nerve constriction syndrome, rheumatic arthroses, and accidents. Dr Kiekenbeck offers arthroscopic medical care, open surgeries as well as implantation of elbow joint prostheses. Most frequently, he treats sulcus ulnaris syndrome, tennis or golf elbow, and elbow arthrosis. Nerve diseases of the elbow joint are and must be excluded. As a specialist in the field of elbow diseases and elbow surgery, Dr Kiekenbeck and his team are available for their patients by offering extensive diagnostic possibilities, modern operating techniques, and optimized organisation of the rehabilitation phase.
