Card
Dr Plamen Staikov is a specialist in bariatric surgery or weight loss surgery as well as medical director and chief of surgery at the Sachsenhausen Hospital.
At the Obesity Centre in Frankfurt, Dr Staikov treats obesity both conservatively as well as surgically with the aim of lasting weight reduction, health restoration, and minimisation of sequelae.
Obesity – a Disease
Morbid obesity is steadily increasing in the Western world. One quarter of the German population is overweight to obese. Few are aware of the clinical significance of this disease. However, long-term obesity can lead to serious health damage. Obesity is a risk factor for almost every chronic disease. It is commonly associated with diabetes, vascular disease, stroke, heart attack, tumour diseases, sleep apnoea, and joint wear. It also creates a social problem for obese people. They are excluded, and it is very difficult for them to participate in everyday movements or recreational activities. It is becoming increasingly difficult for the morbidly obese in a society that places increasingly more emphasis on outward appearances.
Interdisciplinary Obesity Centre
The Obesity Centre at the Sachsenhausen Hospital in Frankfurt am Main is led by Dr Plamen Staikov MD. Here, obesity is treated both conservatively and surgically with great success. Patients are cared for both pre- and post-operatively. After bariatric surgery, they are placed in an after-care programme to ensure long-term success.
The Obesity Centre of Dr Plamen Staikov MD is one of the most top rated in the surgical treatment of morbid obesity across Germany. All interventions of bariatric surgery are offered and regularly performed in Sachsenhausen so that Dr Staikov and his team can rely on many years of expertise. An interdisciplinary approach is always used for the care of obese patients. Surgeons, endocrinologists, diabetologists, psychologists, and nutritionists work hand-in-hand to ensure the best possible treatment. In addition to surgical treatment, Dr Plamen Staikov is also available in an advisory capacity for non-surgical treatment options. Dr Plamen Staikov and his team also implement a multi-modal treatment concept in collaboration with the health centre MEDIPARG and other partners. Under medical supervision, patients actively lose weight through movement, dietary changes, and behavioural modification.
Certification as Competence Centre for Obesity and Metabolic Surgery
In September 2018, the Sachsenhausen hospital, which has been one of the leading obesity centres for decades, was awarded the certificate as a competence centre. The certifications are implemented in cooperation with the Surgical Association for Adiposity Therapy and Metabolic Surgery (CAADIP), the German Society for General and Visceral Surgery (DGAV).
Experienced and Extensive Surgery in One Place
In addition to specialising in bariatric surgery, the Sachsenhausen Hospital under the surgical direction of Dr Plamen Staikov offers tumour surgery of the colon, the stomach, and the thyroid as well as traumatological-orthopaedic surgery, hernia surgery, proctology, and endocrine surgery. Almost all procedures are performed using a minimally invasive technique. Dr Staikov is highly experienced in the keyhole surgery technique (laparoscopic surgery). The patients are placed under less stress, need less pain medication, can return to a normal state more quickly, and are exposed to fewer risks.

Information about Frankfurt
Frankfurt is one of the most important financial centres in Germany and Europe. With its skyscrapers unique in Europe, Frankfurt rises above the Main on an area of approximately 243 square kilometres and at its centre accommodates about 700.000 inhabitants. Frankfurt was officially mentioned for the first time in 794 and played a decisive role during the imperial age. Much of the city was destroyed by bombing in World War II by the Allies. The historic old town, however, is preserved, just as its culturally important role in Europe. Today the old town is a tourist magnet that repeatedly attracts visitors from all over the world.
