Prostate Problems: State-of-the-Art Techniques for Minimally Invasive Prostate Removal through the Urethra
An enlarged prostate can lead to discomfort when urinating and significantly reduce the quality of life of the patient. Prostate specialist Dr Waisbrod can remove these benign tissue changes in the prostate through a gentle and minimally invasive procedure and alleviate the symptoms.
The procedure is carried out via the urethra using spinal anesthesia, so general anesthesia is not necessary. The experienced specialist uses a unique instrument to enter the bladder through the urethra. The enlarged parts of the prostate can then be removed transurethral.
The surgical procedure takes about an hour. After the surgery, Dr Waisbrod places a bladder catheter, which must remain in the bladder for about two to three days. Each treatment is planned individually with the patient, and Dr Waisbrod explains the surgical steps in detail. The doctor responds sensitively and confidentially to wishes and questions.
Vapor Therapy for the Minimally Invasive Treatment of Benign Prostate Enlargement
Water vapor therapy for the prostate uses the energy stored in water vapor. Clinical studies show an excellent response to the symptoms. The necessary re-treatment rate after four years was less than 10%. The advantage of the method is that the patient can fully exercise and resume work after about one week. The risk of secondary bleeding is also low. Antegrade ejaculation (ejaculation) can be preserved with this method. Dr Waisbrod has been carrying out this surgery regularly since 2021 and is certified in this field.
Sterile steam is released throughout the target tissue of the prostate during the treatment. Over time, the dead cells are removed through the body's natural healing process, causing the prostate to shrink. As the body breaks down the excess tissue, the urethra opens up, reducing the symptoms of BPH.
Most patients experience symptom relief after just four weeks; maximum benefit can set in within three months. The response varies from patient to patient. Prostate medications prescribed before treatment should be continued until the effect is achieved.
Dr Waisbrod has had positive experience with this treatment method for several years. As with any therapy, a careful indication is necessary.
For Patients with a Large Prostate: Open Prostate Surgery/Da Vinci Adenoma Surgical Removal of the Prostate
If the prostate is significantly enlarged, minimally invasive removal of the tissue can sometimes not be carried out. In this case, there is the option of open surgery. In open prostate surgery, Dr Waisbrod makes a skin incision above the pubic bone in the area of the bladder. This method allows the doctor to remove a large amount of prostate tissue in a very short time. Alternatively, the tissue can be removed robot-assisted using the Da Vinci system.
Beforehand, Dr Waisbrod carefully examines the size of the prostate and discusses with the patient whether a minimally invasive procedure is possible, or the open surgery or robot-assisted option should be chosen. Surgical access via the urethra is not an option if a large amount of tissue needs to be removed.
Because, in this case, the open procedure proves to be much gentler. Dr Waisbrod attaches great importance to providing patients with detailed and honest advice. The patient's wishes are given high priority and are always considered.
Total Removal of the Prostate in Prostate Cancer
The complex treatment of prostate cancer is one of Dr Waisbrod's main focuses. Total removal of the prostate in malignant degeneration of the prostate tissue is the optimal form of treatment for cancer that has previously only affected the organ itself.
During the 3-hour surgery, the surgeon removes the prostate and seminal vesicles, and if necessary, lymph nodes from the true pelvis. A bladder catheter must be worn for a few days after the surgery. This protects the new internal sutures between the bladder, neck, and urethra. Thanks to his many years of experience, Dr Waisbrod and his team can carry out the procedure with great care and utmost precision.
The removal of the prostate can be carried out in a minimally invasive and robot-assisted technique using the Da Vinci system. The surgical options are discussed in advance with the patient in detail. The surgical robot offers the advantage of better optical magnification and a three-dimensional view. In addition, the surgeon can move the required instruments freely in all dimensions. This makes the surgical robot an excellent instrument in urology for working gently, precisely, and with minimal blood loss.
The surgical treatment of prostate cancer is always carried out according to the latest scientific findings.
