Card
Prof. Dr Nils Ole Schmidt is a specialist in neurosurgery and director of the Clinic and Polyclinic for Neurosurgery at the University Hospital of Regensburg.
As a center for maximum care, Prof. Schmidt's competent team offers the entire spectrum of neurosurgery, using the latest diagnostic and surgical techniques based on the newest scientific findings. The interventions are low-risk and gentle for patients thanks to state-of-the-art anesthesia procedures and minimally invasive surgical approaches.
Prof. Dr Schmidt: Highly Specialized Neurosurgery at the University Hospital of Regensburg
The high-performance neurosurgery team in Regensburg, led by Prof. Dr Schmidt, stands for the most modern therapy concepts and empathetic and interdisciplinary structures. Diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are highly specialized, and great value is placed on medicine at the highest level.
In addition, exceptional functional imaging, neuropsychological procedures, and the exact representation of brain functions are used for diagnostic purposes. The surgery is planned in detail using neuronavigation and carried out using the most modern techniques, either minimally invasive or open surgery. During the surgery, neurological functions are monitored using intraoperative monitoring.
Brain Tumors: Diagnosis and Treatment of Central and Peripheral Tumors
One of the clinic's particular areas of focus is the surgical removal of brain tumors. A brain tumor diagnosis means a significant turning point in the patient's life and raises many questions and concerns. Prof. Dr Schmidt's expert team advises patients with great empathy and many years of experience and develops a treatment plan based on the latest scientific findings.
The entire spectrum of peripheral and central nervous system tumors is treated in the clinic. This includes tumors of the brain, but also tissue growths of the spinal cord, metastases, and rarer tumors of the nervous system. The experienced team at the University Hospital in Regensburg combines empathy and competence, taking worried patients on their treatment path empathetically under their wing.
Great emphasis is placed on a comprehensive medical history and diagnostics and a detailed explanation of all treatment steps. The neurosurgery specialist takes sufficient time to discuss any questions and fears and eliminate possible problems.
The interdisciplinary team can address the specific needs of each individual patient. The physicians at the University Hospital of Regensburg are constantly pushing forward intensive research and further development of treatment methods. The experienced neurosurgeon uses minimally invasive and open surgical approaches during the procedures. Special techniques are also offered, such as operating on awake patients.
Specialist in Spine Surgery: Effective Treatment Methods for Disk Herniations and Spinal Stenosis
Gentle and scientifically well-founded surgeries and excellent technical equipment enable outstanding results in spinal surgery. Common conditions such as herniated disks are treated here competently and routinely.
Persistent back pain, for example, caused by spondylolisthesis, can be treated by robot-guided and consequently millimeter-precise insertion of screws, along with the option of microsurgical decompression of the spinal canal for spinal canal stenosis.
Prof. Dr Nils Ole Schmidt also routinely carries out more complex revision surgeries and treatments for spinal cord tumors. Interdisciplinary treatment is always a top priority. As part of a university spine center, intensive treatment and a promising healing process can be guaranteed in collaboration with the Department of Trauma Surgery, the radiology department, and the physiotherapists.
Neurovascular Diseases: Highest Level of Expertise in the Treatment of Aneurysms and Vascular Malformations
In the worst case, dilated blood vessels or vascular malformations in the brain can rupture, causing a dangerous cerebral hemorrhage. Therefore, surgical treatment of aneurysms is recommended after diagnosis if they reach a specific size.
The vessels can be imaged using specific diagnostics, and the individual risk of bleeding for the patient can be determined. Then, the neurosurgical team discusses the results with the clinic for neuroradiology. An individual treatment plan is created together and used as the basis for the personal consultation with the patient.
Then, the treatment can be carried out by an endovascular procedure by the neuroradiologists using a vascular coil or by the neurosurgeons in an open surgical procedure known as clipping. Highly experienced surgeons routinely carry out these delicate procedures. Generally, intraoperative neuromonitoring is used. After surgery, the patient remains in the hospital for about four to seven days and is cared for by a highly professional nursing team.
Modern Skull Base Surgery: Precise Surgical Intervention for Tumors and Injuries
Effective, interdisciplinary cooperation is very important at the Department of Neurosurgery in Regensburg. To this end, the neurosurgeons meet with experts from various medical fields, such as the ENT clinic, radiology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and ophthalmology, for a weekly skull base conference.
This allows a detailed treatment plan to be prepared for each case, drawing on a wide range of experience. The main areas of skull base surgery include tumors of the cranial nerves, meningeal tumors, injuries to the base of the skull, and tumors of the paranasal sinuses or orbit.
Prof. Dr Schmidt operates even on rare tumors with the highest precision and state-of-the-art surgical methods. Since, in some cases, a complete removal of the tumor is not possible due to its proximity to critical anatomical structures, a subsequent radiotherapy treatment can be planned.
Many Years of Experience in the Treatment of Tumors of the Pituitary Gland and Malignant Tumors or Cysts
A pituitary gland tumor can cause various symptoms, depending on whether the tissue proliferation is hormonally active or inactive. In addition, pituitary tumors can be malignant or benign. Due to the variety of hormonal functions of the pituitary gland, endocrinological co-treatment is usually recommended.
Tumors are most often removed via the transnasal approach, which is why, in some cases, surgery is also carried out in cooperation with the ENT clinic. In addition to the more common tumors, the experienced team also treats benign malformation tumors, cysts of the pituitary gland, and abscesses.
Patients undergoing pituitary surgery should expect to stay in the hospital for about seven to ten days since electrolyte levels must be monitored after the procedure. In individual cases, electrolyte imbalances may occur that require medical treatment.
