computed tomography, as well as DEXA bone density measurement, are certainly available. Minimally invasive joint endoscopy (arthroscopy) is also part of our range of services. Last but not least, the Clinic for Orthopedics in Basel carries out laboratory analyses that are important for musculoskeletal diseases such as arthrosis.
Broad Orthopedic Treatment Spectrum
The SWISS ORTHO CENTER covers all therapeutic measures that are used within orthopedics and traumatology - whether conservative or surgical therapy is involved. Prof. Valderrabano's Treatment Focus
Diseases of the musculoskeletal system are usually accompanied by pain and lack of mobility - whether the foot or the spine is affected. As a result, the affected patients' quality of life is significantly reduced. Prof. Valderrabano has made it his business, at Orthopedics Basel, helping his patients regain a new quality of life and activity efficiency.
Arthrosis Surgery
In addition to orthopedics and traumatology of the entire musculoskeletal system, arthrosis surgery, in particular, is considered Prof. Valderrabano's specialty. Two methods are used: joint-preserving therapy and joint replacement. The orthopedist carries out both variants skillfully and safely thanks to his many years of medical experience and consistent further training.
Joint Preserving Surgical Orthopedics
Prof. Valderrabano and his team prefer joint preserving treatments over the implantation of prostheses, as long as they are useful. In joint-preserving surgery, the arthrosis expert can reconstruct or transplant the damaged cartilage using the latest technology in a minimally invasive way. Sometimes it is possible to preserve the joint by surgical cartilage reconstruction. Depending on the initial situation, various procedures are used in arthrosis surgery to reconstruct the cartilage ranging from the removal of frayed cartilage fragments to the transplantation of repair tissue that can compensate for cartilage damage. Furthermore, the leg axis and thus the load on the cartilage surfaces can also be corrected by osteotomy.
Implantation of Artificial Joints
If the cartilage is heavily worn over a large area, the joint usually has to be replaced with an artificial joint. Prof. Valderrabano can help to restore mobility in the affected joint and improve the quality of life with a full or partial prosthesis. When it comes to prostheses and joint replacement, Prof. Valderrabano is considered an internationally accepted expert. Through his studies in biomechanics, he always has the stress on the axes in mind. When he replaces a joint, he does not only use knowledge of a surgeon, but also the ideas of a physicist or biomechanist. If this is not taken into account, the prosthesis will be incorrectly stressed from the very beginning, will start to hurt and loosen. Therefore, in most cases, a prosthesis is not simply implanted, but the complete mechanics are restored. Based on his expertise, he has developed an innovative ankle prosthesis together with American colleagues.
Foot Surgery - Specialist for Foot Orthopedics in Basel
Foot and ankle surgery, as well as treating sports injuries in the foot and ankle, are also among his specialties. This specialization has made him a demanded expert in the world of sport. Athletes from all over the world repeatedly demanded his help. The treatment spectrum in the field of foot and ankle surgery includes:
- Ligament reconstruction
- Fracture stabilization
- Surgical correction of malpositions
- Ankle joint arthrosis surgery (osteotomies, prosthetics)
- Forefoot deformities (hallux surgery)
- Diabetic feet
Sports Orthopedics - Many Well-Known Athletes Are Among Prof. Valderrabano's Patients

These include the treatment of foot/ankle injuries such as torn ligaments, cartilage lesions, and knee injuries such as torn cruciate ligaments, meniscus lesions, and ligament ruptures primarily. But, also inflammations, joint dislocations, and fractures can occur in sports accidents. As with all his treatments, the Well-respected orthopedic surgeon in Basel places particular emphasis on the optimal restoration of bones, ligaments, and joints.
