Information About the Field of Gastroenterology
Our stomach, including everything that's inside, is the daily contact surface for hundreds of germs, nutrients, and pollutants. So, as the saying goes, 'the way to a man's heart is through his stomach', the same applies to everything. All things go through the gut!
The Human Gastrointestinal Tract
The food path passes from the mouth into the esophagus and from there into the stomach, the place where sugar and carbohydrates are broken down. Digestion continues in the small intestine where enzymes from the pancreas and gallbladder are added. They allow the absorption of fats and fat-soluble vitamins. Also, water and electrolytes are taken from the diet. The nutrients then pass through the liver (which processes the substances for utilization and storage) and bloodstream to their target organs. Pollutants are eliminated in the liver (if possible) and later excreted via the intestine (water-insoluble substances) or kidneys (water-soluble substances). Any indigestible or excess residual components of the diet are excreted after passing through the colon.
What is Gastroenterology?
Gastroenterology is an independent branch of internal medicine. Gastro stands for stomach, Enteron for gut, and Logos for doctrine. The gastroenterologist treats all diseases of the human digestive tract. Benign gastric changes, inflammation, and infections, as well as malignant tumors in the abdomen are some of those maladies.
The treatment of gastrointestinal diseases often involves a combination of medical and surgical therapies. Therefore, there is close cooperation between gastroenterologists and abdominal surgeons (visceral surgery). Examples include the treatment of gallstones, inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis, pancreatic disease or colon cancer surgery. In addition, certain diseases of the esophagus make an interdisciplinary treatment with physicians specializing in otorhinolaryngology useful.
Gastroenterologists use a variety of modern methods to diagnose their patient’s conditions. These techniques include X-rays, MRI, CT, sonography, and especially endoscopy.
Which Gastroenterologists in Germany are Experts?
If a patient suffers from abdominal pain or stomach pain, he asks himself, “where can I get the best gastroenterologist near me?” Which stomach doctor is the most qualified is not a question that is easy to answer, therefore, patients can only rely on the physician’s experience. The more patients he successfully treated, the more know-how he should have acquired.

How Expensive is a Specialist in Gastroenterology in Germany?
For patients from abroad, the cost for gastroenterological treatment is strictly regulated by the German government (GOÄ Department). German physicians are not entitled to determine their own self-calculated fees for medical services. They are legally obliged to adhere to the official fixed tariff rates for doctors.
In order to calculate the price for a specific gastroenterology therapy in Germany, gastroenterologists and stomach clinics first require detailed information on the specific symptoms. This data can be transferred to the hospital in form of medical reports, findings or images taken prior to treatment. The stomach clinic then prepares a cost estimate. In most cases, the amount due must be paid ahead of the healing process.
