Information About the Field of Mini implants

What Are Mini Implants?

In dentistry, mini implants are small, one-piece dental implants that are placed into the jaw for stabilizing removable dentures and attaching prostheses. In contrast to traditional implants, which consist of two parts, mini implants are one-piece and have a diameter of only 1.8 to 3.0 millimeters.

Usually, several mini implants must be inserted to attach a bridge. The mini implants are inserted into the jawbone so that the head of the implant protrudes. The prosthesis adapted to this head is then fixed to it using the push-button principle. Pressure can be immediately applied to mini implants after insertion so that the prosthesis is instantly usable.

Advantages of Mini Implants

The advantage of mini implants over conventional implants is that they can be placed in a small procedure. Mini implants can also be used for risk patients and elderly patients who are predestined for a wound-healing disorder due to previous illnesses.

The procedure is overall gentler and causes fewer after-effects in the form of swelling and bleeding. The mini implants provide a better hold for dentures and, at the same time, are easy to insert. Furthermore, the dentures can be removed at any time, e.g., for cleaning with a toothbrush. But, mini implants are not suitable as an alternative to traditional implants, but rather as a supplement.

For Whom Are Mini Implants Advisable?

Mini implants are the right solution for slipping and wobbling dentures. Patients experience this as a problem when chewing and speaking so that a remedy with mini implants is a suitable therapy. Due to the easy procedure, the insertion of mini implants is no problem even for risk patients with previous illnesses and older patients.

Furthermore, mini implants are used in patients with a narrow jawbone and insufficient substance to anchor a classical implant, who want to avoid a jaw reconstruction. Since the hold and stability are not quite as good as in traditional implants, they are recommended whenever possible.

Mini Implants Costs

The cost of mini implants varies according to manufacturer and type. In general, the costs for the implant and the doctor's fee must be calculated. The mini implant cost between 1000-2000 Euro. But, it must be considered that often several mini implants are necessary for the fixation of the prostheses. Besides, the fees for the specially adapted dental prosthesis must be included.

For the insertion of four implants in the mandible or maxilla, the total costs can be estimated at 3000-4000 Euro. The treating doctor will determine the costs individually in advance. It is advisable to enquire with the statutory health insurance company about subsidy possibilities. Depending on the health insurance company, higher subsidies can be applied for with completed bonus programs, e.g., regular dentist appointments.

Who Are Specialists for Mini Dental Implants?

Mini implants are inserted by specialists in oral and maxillofacial surgery. These are physicians who have completed both medical and dental studies before their specialist training. Dentists with further practice in oral surgery and implant surgery are also specialized in mini implants. They can offer a wide range of treatment: a well-founded consultation, intervention, and aftercare.
