Information About the Field of Paranasal sinus cancer
What is paranasal sinus cancer?
Paranasal sinus cancer is a malignant tumor that occurs in the paranasal sinuses, especially in the maxillary and ethmoid sinuses. These specific paranasal sinuses are located near the nose and on either side of it, i.e. in the area of the upper jaw.
Cancer in the paranasal sinuses is very rare and men are especially affected. They generally develop it twice as often as women.
Paranasal sinus cancer symptoms
As cancer in the paranasal sinuses has enough space to grow unnoticed, symptoms of paranasal sinus cancer typically appear late, when the disease is already advanced. Patients often report impaired nasal breathing, nosebleeds, discharge, and pain. In later stages of the disease, additional symptoms may include visual disturbances, ear pain, and facial paralysis.
Causes and risk factors
The exact cause is unknown. Some risk factors may, however, contribute to its development. These include working with leather, certain types of wood and metals in the absence of sufficient respiratory protection, because the fumes generated in the process may have a damaging effect. Another risk factor is the consumption of alcohol and tobacco (both as smoke and in the form of snuff). Chronic sinusitis is also considered a risk factor.
Paranasal sinus cancer treatment
Paranasal sinus cancer is preferably treated surgically by removing the tumor completely. Radiotherapy can be used before or after the operation to shrink the tumor or prevent it from recurring.
However, some tumors are inoperable, for instance because they have already invaded neighboring tissue. In this case, a treatment plan is developed that is individually tailored to the patient. This usually includes radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
Chances of recovery and prognosis
The prognosis is generally good and there is a chance of a complete recovery if the cancer is detected early and has not yet spread to the surrounding tissue. Nevertheless, almost half of patients develop a recurrence, which means that the sinus cancer returns after treatment. Prognosis also worsens if the cancer is discovered late. Overall, around 60% of patients survive the first 5 years after diagnosis.
Which doctors and clinics specialize in paranasal sinus cancer?
Anyone in need of a doctor would expect the best possible medical care for themselves. Therefore, patients are looking for the most suitable clinic for their needs. Since this is not an objective decision and a respectable doctor would refrain from claiming to be the best, patients must trust the experience of a doctor.
